Reflective Statement
I observed the relationship between visitor and resident as
well. Few residents had visitors on a regular basis, and
some almost never had visitors. Most of the visitors
happened to be sons and daughters visiting parents. Of
course this part of working at a nursing home has a
sociological relevance because of the family aspect. Family
has become an important part of my life, and I felt sorry
for those who had few visits. These experiences have helped
me in case I have to deal with parents in a nursing home.
Most of the residents that could communicate
normally seemed to crave any type of personal contact. These
residents would spark a conversation with me on a variety of
subjects. Although I could not talk long, I could tell that
residents benefited and enjoyed this. This has actually led
me to make a greater effort to interact with my own
grandparents.
A class I took titled Work and Family
institutions taught me that as people get older they need
people to take care of them. Usually children hold this job,
and I saw that in action while working at the nursing home.
Sometimes children came in to take their parent out for
lunch or to a family gathering. Some children directly made
decisions in regard to medication, care, etc. Health care
workers do the actual services, and that is where most of
the responsibility lies.
