Reflective Statement
I had another important relationship with my coworkers. In
many cases we had to cooperate to get the job done. As I
worked more with these people, this got easier. This
relationship isn’t quite a friendship, but I learned a lot
about the people I worked with. As I am finding out now,
these relationships are important to finding a job after
college. These people can give an honest and real opinion of
me that will help a potential employer to learn about me.
As a person, this experience has shown me some
of the things that I think are important the main one being
my family. This experience has also helped me to shape my
personality. When I first started the job, someone could
describe me as very shy. By the time I finished working at
the nursing home, I had opened up and I could strike of
conversations with people I didn’t even know. These
interactions have allowed me to unlock a part of me that did
not want to come out. Now I would describe myself as a very
friendly and personable individual. That quality helps when
dealing with people.
As a sociologist, the experience has helped me
to learn about relationships; especially those that I have
learned about in class. Reflecting on this helps to put some
of the ideas and theories I have learned in to perspective.
Some of the ideas I learned in class help to explain some of
the thing I saw and experienced while working at a nursing
home. I saw first hand how relationships worked, and now I
understand why these relationships were the way they were.
Now that I am completing my sociological
requirements at UI, I have the knowledge to look at
situations in a different way. I use what I learned in class
to evaluate relationships and react accordingly. Sociology
allows me to look at situations from a different perspective
which I understand. I can use this knowledge to continue to
effectively interact with people.
